England has in excess of 6,000 miles of coastline, in the north east seaside towns include Whitby and Scarborough in North Yorkshire, whilst in the north west seaside towns include Morecombe and the seaside town of Blackpool in Lancashire. Merseyside includes the popular resort of Southport, West Kirby and New Brighton in the Wirral. The east of England includes the resorts of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, Skegness and Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire.
The south west of England includes the coastal resorts in Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Hampshire. The area includes the Jurassic Coast that has been a World Heritage Site (Dorset and East Devon Coast) since 2001; it has been described as one of the great natural wonders of the UK. Well known resorts in the south west include the town of Bournemouth and Poole in Dorset and the Torbay area including the 'English Riviera' and the towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham located on the Devon coast.
The south east of England includes the coastal areas in East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent, many of the coastal towns are within 1 to 2 hours drive of London or are accessible by train and bus making them an ideal place for a quick getaway for those living in London and the south east. Seaside towns include Whitstable, Herne Bay, Folkestone and Westgate-on-Sea on the Kent coast.
The seaside towns of Hastings, Eastbourne are located in East Sussex along with the city of Brighton which is one of the most popular seaside destinations in England; the city is well known for its beaches, pier, amusements, facilities and is a regional centre for culture and the arts. The seaside towns of Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis are located in West Sussex.
